Haverty's Furniture loaned more than a dozen mattresses for the evacuation shelter at Centenary after it was learned that all emergency-agency cots had been depleted. Director of Public Safety Zeke Aull, who coordinated Centenary's shelter preparation efforts, is pictured at right.

Student Patrol member Andre Pitre receives air mattresses loaned by Golda Young and family, who were among scores of faculty, staff, students and trustees loaning bedding in preparation for an estimated 70 to 100 Dillard students and staff.

Student volunteers Meredith Davis (pictured) and Stephen Scarlato were among several who helped inflate the many air beds and mattresses on loan.

Chris Redford from KTBS-TV Channel 3 presented live reports for his station's 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts. He had hoped to interview incoming Dillard students, who left New Orleans at 1:30 p.m. and hoped to arrive by 8:30 p.m. Instead, the normal five-and-a-half- to six-hour drive took them 16 hours due to extremely heavy traffic. The Dillard group would arrive at 5 a.m.
