Centenary Opera Workshop Performances Set for Oct. 30 & 31

SHREVEPORT — The Centenary Opera Workshop will feature a variety of musical and theatrical talents in its upcoming fall production set for Saturday, Oct. 30, and Sunday, Oct. 31.

The program will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday in Anderson Auditorium, which is located in the Hurley Music Building. It is free and open to the public, with seating provided on a first-come basis.

Highlights include two scenes from Bernstein's West Side
Story
, "Gee, Officer Krupke," featuring the male singers of Opera Workshop and "I Feel Pretty," featuring a group of female singers with soloist Shelly Walker.

The program will conclude with excerpts from Act II of Bizet's opera Carmen, including the opening "Gypsy Song," the "Toreador" song and the famous quintet of smugglers.

Opera Workshop students will sing under the vocal direction of Dr. Gale Odom, dean of the Hurley School of Music. Sophomore Scott Brown, a double major in music and engineering, will be accompanying on piano.

Senior Sarah Kate Ross will perform as Carmen, Katie McKee and Lauren Thrift as the gypsies Frasquita and Mercedes, Codey Whitt and Adam Philley as smugglers Remendado and Dancairo and Billie Harland as the toreador Escamillo in Carmen.

According to "workshop style," there are minimal costumes and sets in the production. Emphasis is primarily placed upon developing the singing and acting skills of the students.
