Small Colleges Expert Dr. Samuel Schuman to Speak Jan. 12 at Centenary College

SHREVEPORT, LA — Dr. Samuel Schuman, author of Old Main: Small Colleges in Twenty-First Century America, will speak Thursday, Jan. 12 from 11:10 a.m.-noon in Kilpatrick Auditorium of the Smith Building at Centenary College. The program is free and open to the public.

In his lecture, Dr. Schuman will address questions like: "Why are the virtues of 'community' and 'integration' at a contemporary small college like Centenary so important?" He will discuss his perceptions of Centenary as a visiting researcher, how Centenary is set apart from other small colleges and what he sees as Centenary's future.

Dr. Schuman, a prolific writer of over 50 articles and five books, is the chancellor of the University of Minnesota, Morris. His most recent book, Old Main, is a survey of small American colleges, including Centenary. Having observed the growing trend of American college students who choose to attend large universities over colleges with fewer than 3,000 students, Dr. Schuman comments on how small colleges today continue to offer important and distinct values to students, teachers and communities. By capitalizing on the benefits of a close-knit community of learners and teachers and an education that integrates curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular options, small colleges have unique advantages in the educational world, Schuman says.
