Centenary Voice Faculty Members Horace English, Gale Odom to Present Recital Jan. 21

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College voice faculty members Horace English and Gale Odom will present a joint recital Friday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium of the Hurley School of Music.


Dr. Horace English

Bass-baritone English enjoys an active career in opera, oratorio and solo recital. Notable opera roles include Blitch in Susannah, Mephistopheles in Faust, and Sparafucile in Rigoletto. He has also starred in musical theater, in the title roles of Sweeney Todd and Man of La Mancha. A native of Atlanta, he holds degrees from Shorter College and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He also holds the Doctor of Music degree in performance from Florida State University. He is a professor of music at Centenary College’s Hurley School of Music.

Coloratura soprano Odom is a frequent performer with opera and concert appearances in Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas. She has performed over 30 opera roles, including Marie in Daughter of the Regiment, Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos, Micäela in Carmen and Hanna in The Merry Widow. Her music theater roles have included Johanna in Sweeney Todd and Cinderella in Into the Woods, and she appeared as the Church Singer in the motion picture Steel Magnolias. She will be singing the soprano solos in the upcoming Shreveport Symphony performance of Handel’s Judas Maccabeus in April of 2005.


Dr. Gale Odom

Dr. Odom holds an M.M. from Indiana University and the B.M. and D.M.A. degrees from the University of North Texas, where she was a student of Virginia Botkin. She has taught at Centenary College since 1978. In 1994, she was named Centenary’s Outstanding Teacher, and in 1998, she became dean of the Hurley School of Music there.

Dr. English will be accompanied by pianist Joyce English. Pianist Les Downs, lecturer in music at Centenary, will accompany Dr. Odom. The program contains Schubert’s Shepherd on the Rock, with clarinetist Timothy Wright; songs by Strauss, Quilter, and Finzi; arias from Massenet’s Hérodiade and Donizetti’s Don Pasquale; and the duet “A Little Priest” from Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd.

Admission is free and open to the public.
