Homecoming at Centenary College Begins with Tribute to 50th Anniversary of Honor Court on Feb. 17

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College will open its Homecoming Weekend with its annual Founders’ Day Convocation at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in Brown Chapel. The program is open to the public.

This year’s convocation will include a tribute to 50 years of active service by the Honor Court at the college. Speakers will be former Chief Justices Beth Bonner of the Class of 1999 and Ed Harbuck, Class of 1956 and a member of the first Honor Court in 1955.

Centenary's Honor Court is a judicial organization comprised of Centenary students who have been elected by student and faculty to administer the Honor Code. The code reflects a personal responsibility to operate on honor within the classroom and to respond to any violations of the policy. The Honor Court has stood as an example of the educational standards set and enforced by the students for the past 50 years and it is an integral part of Centenary.

Along with the Founders’ Day Convocation, there will be numerous Homecoming Weekend events open to current students, alumni and the public. Theme this year is CentenaryPalooza 2005. On Saturday, Feb. 19, activities include the annual Homecoming Parade at noon, followed by a tailgate party and Centenary Ladies and Gents basketball games at 2 and 4:30 p.m., respectively, in the Gold Dome. Students will recognize the members of the Homecoming Court during halftime of the Gents game.

Additionally during homecoming, the Centenary Alumni Association will announce the recipient of its highest honor, the Alumni Hall of Fame designation, and will announce its Alumni Loyalty Award winner and Honorary Alumna Award. Newly named members of the Athletic Hall of Fame will also be honored.

Legacy Day on Friday, Feb. 18, will include an invitational luncheon allowing scholarship recipients to thank their donors. Speakers will be Jennifer Clark Pearson, Class of 1997, and student Ashley Sittig, a Nan Christian Scholar. Alumni are invited to bring their college-bound children to the campus that day to learn more about Centenary.

Centenary’s Church Careers Institute, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, will present the Sunday worship service with the Rev. David Dykes preaching at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb 20, in Brown Chapel. A reception and fellowship session will be held at 9 a.m. in Kilpatrick Auditorium. On the preceding day, Church Careers will have a 30th Anniversary Breakfast and Family Fun Day at Sci-Port Discovery Center and an evening banquet in the Fitness Center.

In 1974, Dr. D.L. Dykes Jr., Class of 1938, founded the Church Careers program to develop leadership for the church at the undergraduate level. Since its inception, over 500 students have completed the program.
