Hurley Orchestra Contest at Centenary College of Louisiana Invites High School Students Nationwide to Submit Original Compositions for Orchestra

SHREVEPORT, LA— Centenary College of Louisiana is inviting students enrolled in grades 9-12 at any high school or arts institution in the United States to submit original compositions for orchestra in the Hurley Orchestra Composition Contest.

The first-place winner of the contest has the opportunity to earn a half-tuition scholarship as a theory/composition major at Centenary College. The second-place winner will earn a one-quarter tuition scholarship.

The Hurley Orchestra will perform the first-place entry in concert on April 10, 2006, in the Anderson Auditorium of the Hurley Music Building. The winning student composer will receive a recorded copy of the live performance—engineered, edited and preserved on CD—by the Hurley School of Music Recording Studio.

Students currently enrolled in grades 9-12 at any High School or Arts Institution in the United States are invited to submit a composition for orchestra constructed from all original material. The submitted work should reflect a fundamental understanding of music composition techniques, range and abilities of the various instruments written for, and a cohesive effective approach to the orchestration. Any style, form and musical language is acceptable within the parameters of "Western Art" music (no quarter-tone or Electro-acoustic music).

An application form, a $10 fee and a teacher recommendation are due by Dec. 1, with the student composers having until Feb. 1 to submit their orchestral scores.
