RECENT NEWS AND EVENTS

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION. With Northwest Louisiana abuzz with movie and television crews, many of them displaced from South Louisiana, the Centenary campus has seen its share of film location scouts in the last few weeks. Though nothing is finalized, representatives of the films The Guardian (starring Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher) and Factory Girl (starring Sienna Miller) have made multiple visits to Centenary buildings and grounds. Among the visitors: Guardian director Andrew Davis and Factory Girl George Hickenloper, who may be speaking on campus in November and using some Centenary interns. The production crew for Roadhouse 2 was using the grass area and parking area by the Gold Dome on Thursday for a staging area while they were shooting across the street at the Java Junction coffeehouse. And earlier this week, Centenary runners were seen jogging past the nearby South Highlands neighborhood location where crews were filming a segment of the new television series Thief.

SIX NEW $100,000 ENDOWED PROFESSORSHIPS have been funded by Centenary donors and the Louisiana Board of Regents. They are the William Arceneaux Endowed Professorship in Foreign Language presented in tribute to Sgt. Robin Fell, two Dr. Charles T. Beaird Endowed Professorships of Philosophy, the John Spencer and Virginia Doyle Hardy Endowed Professorship and two A.C. "Cheesy" Voran Choir Director Endowed Professorships. CHURCH OF LATTER DAY SAINTS SCHOLARS LECTURED, SCREENED FILMS on campus during a Religious Studies series commemorating Mormon prophet Joseph Smith's 200th birthday. Professors Peter Huff and Ross Smith coordinated many of the week's activities, which focused largely on interfaith dialogue and theological awareness. CENTENARY'S FALL BREAK MISSION TRIP yielded 18 students, alumni and staff members working for hurricane relief in Slidell, La. The group gutted moldy sheet rock and floors in several houses and assisted in clean-up at First United Methodist Church in Slidell. SUB RENOVATIONS WERE REVEALED to an enthusiastic audience of Centenary students, faculty, staff and friends in September. New features include a coffee bar, new sofas and study chairs, wireless Internet and a spacious game and recreational area. The College Store has been expanded and the post office has moved to its new location downstairs.

CENTENARY HAPPENINGS, highlighting upcoming events

HALLOWEEN HOOPLA kicks off the basketball season on Monday, Oct. 31 at 9 p.m. in the Gold Dome. There will be scrimmages by the Ladies and Gents basketball teams, raffles, contests, free T-shirts to the first 200 attendees and more. This event replaces the annual Midnight Madness event.

THE 15th ANNUAL CORRINGTON AWARD will go to novelist Bobbie Ann Mason, whose most recent novel, An Atomic Romance, was published by Random House in August. The ceremony, which will include a reading by the author, will take place Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in Kilpatrick Auditorium. A FUSION OF JAPANESE BUTOH DANCE AND THEATRE will be featured in Marjorie Lyons Playhouse's premiere of Wildebeest, an experimental piece created by former Centenary student Stanton Dossett III. CENTENARY'S ANNUAL EMPLOYEE BENEFITS FAIR, on Friday, Nov. 4, will promote health and wellness by offering free flu shots and various screenings to all full-time Centenary employees who are eligible for the College's health benefits. Local health representatives will administer shots and screenings in the Centenary Room at Bynum Commons. Ninety-minute information sessions about health benefits will be held in the South Dining Hall at 8:45 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Online registration is available at: http://www.centenary.edu/hr/benefits.php.

A MARATHON WEEKEND FOR CHORAL CONCERTS begins with Centenary's Camerata performing at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4 in Anderson Auditorium. The Centenary College Choir will give its annual Rhapsody in View concerts at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Shreveport Civic Theatre. Tickets are available for purchase from any Choir member or by calling 318-869-5200. Wrapping up the concert marathon, Centenary's Chorale and Cantare will present a concert at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8 in Anderson Auditorium. EXPERIENCE CENTENARY, an Open House event hosted by the Office of Admissions, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Prospective students will participate in breakout sessions, attend an academic and organizational fair with faculty and students, get questions answered at Q&A sessions and go on campus tours. Prospective music students may also opt to audition for the Hurley School of Music on this date by calling 318-869-5235 to schedule an audition time.

ECHIZEN CERAMICS WILL BE ON DISPLAY AT MEADOWS MUSEUM Nov. 12-Jan. 29 with a full calendar of events including a members' preview and reception, lectures on the art of bonsai trees and the history of Echizen ceramics, a docent training session, a holiday sale of Japanese objects and a special Japanese Family Day Celebration. CENTENARY VS. GEORGIA TECH BASKETBALL GAME will be held at CenturyTel on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. Plan to come support the Gents and wear your Centenary colors. Tickets are free to all faculty and staff members, but they must be picked up in advance at the Gold Dome. Watch for a future announcement about ticket availability.

OFF-BROADWAY IN NEW YORK CITY. Dr. Lee Morgan's son, Lee Morgan, Class of 1985, is starring in Almost Heaven, an off-Broadway musical featuring the songs of John Denver. The show opens in New York City on Nov. 9. Lee, an actor and songwriter, has also been in The Who's Tommy and Brooklyn: The Musical on Broadway. DOOR DECORATING WINNERS were announced at Friday's Coffee Connection. It was a three-way tie for Financial Aid, Business Office and Church Careers. Go check out their creatively decorated doors!
