FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (10/05) Centenary Installs Satellite Recycling Center on Campus
SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College is the new location for a satellite recycling center that takes aluminum, newspapers and mixed papers, which include white paper, colored paper, cardboard boxes, magazines, catalogs, envelopes and manila folders. Centenary Professor Jeanne Hamming and students Amy Harrell of Missouri City, Texas and Dan Kersting of Davenport, Iowa have worked since August to secure the satellite bin, provided by Browning Ferris Industries (BFI), Shreveport’s waste management and recycling company. Professor Hamming is Centenary's environmental fellow for the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) and Ms. Harrell and Mr. Kersting are serving as environmental interns. This project marks their first effort for the 2005-06 year as they strive to improve environmental awareness and participation on Centenary's campus and in the surrounding community. The recycling center has been installed near the corner of Centenary Boulevard and Wilkinson Street in the parking lot behind James Residence Hall. With a four-compartment bin for sorting recyclables, the center is not only conveniently located for easy access to those on Centenary's campus and residents in the Highland neighborhood, but it is simple to use with each compartment clearly labeled. At this time, tin cans, steel cans, glass and plastic cannot be recycled at the satellite center, so a trash can will be available next to the bin to throw away any non-recyclable goods. Proceeds from recycled goods will go directly to Centenary College. For more information, contact Professor Hamming at 318-869-5082 or jhamming@centenary.edu. Additionally, the ACS has a web site that includes information about other environmental projects at http://www.colleges.org/~enviro/. - 30 - |
