Centenary Sociology Professor Authors New Book, Be Not Deceived

SHREVEPORT, LA — Dr. Michelle Wolkomir, assistant professor of sociology at Centenary College, has authored the book Be Not Deceived, which explores the dilemma gay Christians face in their attempts to reconcile their religious and sexual identities.

Published by Rutgers University Press, Wolkomir's book delves into the debate over accepting or rejecting homosexuality in Christian circles, highlighting the approaches of two very different ministries: the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches and Exodus International.

Having conducted ethnographic research in 1995 and 1998, Wolkomir worked on the book in spurts for about a decade. The book has now been nominated for the Charles Horton Cooley Book Award in Symbolic Interaction and for the the American Sociological Association's Sexualities Section Award.

A book-signing and reception will be held Tuesday, April 25, from 2–4 p.m. on the first floor of Magale Library on the Centenary campus. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
