Centenary Student Contributes to New Book in Heritage Language Press Series

19th century French edition published by Centenary student.

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College senior Carrie Lombardino of Shreveport edited text, formatted pages and designed the cover for the newest French edition in a series published by Centenary's Heritage Language Press. This edition contains two short stories, Le Fou de Palerme (The Fool of Palermo, 1873) and "L'Artiste amoureux" ("The Artist in Love," 1844), by 19th-century Louisiana author Alfred Mercier.

Le Fou de Palerme recounts the story of the young and handsome cellist, Angiolo Calamatti who makes the fateful discovery that the beautiful stranger he has come to love is more that she seems. Ensnared ever more tightly in her seductive web, Angiolo teeters on the edge of insanity when he discovers he has been seduced by Death itself. Mercier’s novel offers the reader a tale of fantastic love and untimely death, which critics say is a delightful example of Louisiana Romanticism.

Since 2002, Centenary professors and faculty have published 16 editions through the Heritage Language Press. The Press publishes works that belong to America’s rich multilingual tradition. The only university press within the United States devoted exclusively to American literature written in languages other than English, the Press actively seeks scholarly editions of historic works and contemporary creative endeavors in languages as varied as Arabic, Navajo, Chinese, French and German. The Press believes that for the United States to remain strong in the world, its citizens must remain connected through history and language.

Support for the Press has come through a grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents.

Le Fou de Palerme is available at the Centenary College Store in hardback for $15.50. To order a copy, call 318-869-5278 or email bookstor@centenary.edu.
