Centenary's Meadows Museum of Art Hosts the Northwest Louisiana Artists’ Triennial Competition

SHREVEPORT, LA — Thirty-six Northwest Louisiana artists will be represented in Meadows Museum of Art's Northwest Louisiana Artists’ Triennial Competition with an exhibition opening Feb. 19 and running through May 28.

A Members’ and Artists’ Reception will be held on Saturday, March 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the museum galleries. Connie Bostic of Asheville, N.C., one of the jurors for the competition, will be a guest at the reception and will present a gallery talk that is open to the public Sunday, March 5, at 2 p.m.

Preparations for the competition began early last fall when the museum contacted regional artists to request submissions of works. More than 50 artists responded with slides and CDs that were sent to jurors Bostic and Meg Harders, a Los Angeles artist. The two jurors worked cooperatively for several months to select works for the competition.

Both Bostic and Harders also have their artwork on display at Meadows. Harders’ photo-realistic works are on view in the exhibition, Meg Harders: Landscapes (through March 26). Bostic’s work is also on display in another Meadows exhibition, American Standard: Works by North Carolina Artists (through April 23).

“It was an interesting process to work with Meg Harders on selections for the Triennial Competition,” said Bostic. “We have very different aesthetic sensibilities and disagreed about a number of the selections. In the end, however, our differences in aesthetic tastes created what we feel is a balanced exhibition.”

The Meadows Museum Northwest Louisiana Artists’ Triennial Competition has been designed specifically to provide visibility for working artists from 10 Northwest Louisiana parishes as well as opportunities for regional community members to meet and talk with artists at scheduled events. As part of programming, a number of participating artists have agreed to present gallery talks about their work on select Sundays at 2 p.m. in the museum galleries.

Students from the region will also have an opportunity to view the works when they tour the galleries on school field trips. Tours may be scheduled by calling Educator Leia Lewis at 318-841-7271.

This exhibition is sponsored by Kilpatrick Life Insurance Company.
