FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (1/06) Centenary Professors Gruettner and Bareikis Publish Bilingual Book
SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College professors Mark Gruettner and Robert Bareikis have published a translation and modernization of two 19th-century German novellas. This bilingual edition contains "Black and White" (1847) and "In the Red River Swamps" (1870) by German writer Friedrich Gerstäcker. Friedrich Gerstäcker (1816-1872), well known for "The Pirates of the Mississippi" and "The Regulators of Arkansas," wrote numerous novels and stories filled with rich images of his journeys in the New World. Among these, "Black and White" focuses on the role of slavery in antebellum Missouri, while "In the Red River Swamps" examines postbellum racial strife in the region known today as the Ark-La-Tex. Both stories show that social enlightenment and suspenseful entertainment can blend into meaningful examples of human courage and compassion, the professors said. Published within Centenary's acclaimed Editions Tintamarre, the book appeals to a general audience interested in 19th-century fiction, but is also a resource for students and teachers of German language and literature, translation, comparative literature, social studies and American cultural history. The editors say that they were motivated to publish these translations not only because they are entertaining but also enlightening. This edition is available at Centenary's College Store for $15.50 per copy. For more information, contact Dr. Gruettner at 318-869-5251 or mgruettn@centenary.edu. - 30 - |
