Centenary College Announces Summer Band Concert Series

Centenary's Summer Band Concert Series to Offer Sampling of Jazz, Folk and Classical Music

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary's Summer Band concerts, which will be held June 13, 15, 20 and 27 in Centenary's Hargrove Band Shell, promise to please audiences with a broad selection of music.

All performances begin at 8 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring seat cushions, lawn chairs and picnic baskets. Concerts will be cancelled only due to inclement weather involving lightning. They will proceed if it is only raining.

Tuesday, June 13
At the opening concert, West Monroe High School's band director Robert Freeman will solo on the euphonium, an instrument similar to the tuba. Opera and Broadway fans will enjoy highlights from "Carmen" and "Phantom of the Opera," while lovers of the classics will appreciate excerpts from Vivaldi's "Gloria." The concert is sponsored by Smith & Co., Certified Public Accountants.

Thursday, June 15
A tribute to the late local radio host and music lover Buddy Flowers, the June 15 concert will feature all jazz and big band repertoire. Bill Causey Jr. will direct Mike Williams, a Shreveport native who plays lead trumpet with the Count Basie Orchestra, and Karmyn Tyler, Miss Louisiana 1995 and Centenary alumna whose CD is available on iTunes. 

Tuesday, June 20
Centenary Professor of Chemistry Dr. Tom Ticich will entertain on the accordian, performing three accordian favorites, "Carnival of Venice," "Tico Tico" and "Jalousie." Also featured will be Centenary senior Kenneth Portis, who will conduct Ganne's "Father of Victory." Siebert's "The Trumpets of Rome" and Stevens' "Hawaii Five-O" will round out the program. The concert is sponsored by Kilpatrick Life Insurance Co.

Tuesday, June 27
The finale concert on June 27 will feature trombonist Dick Eckstein on "Seminar," a piece by Texarkana composer Don Colquitt. "Seminar" is based on Hoagy Carmichael's immortal classic, "Stardust." Copland's "Variations on a Shaker Melody" is balanced by Bencriscutto's "Jazz March." Recent graduate Jeremy DeLaCerda will conclude the concert by conducting Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever." The concert is sponsored by AEP Southwestern Electric Power Co.

The Centenary Summer Band was founded in 1957 by B. P. Causey. The series ran until 1987 and was reformulated during the summer of 2000 by Dr. Thomas Stone, director of the series. The current season marks the sixth season of its revival.
