Cantare and Chorale Concert April 4 Moved to Centenary College's Brown Chapel

SHREVEPORT, LA — Two vocal groups at Centenary College -- Cantare and Chorale -- will sing in concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 4.

The program, originally scheduled in Anderson Auditorium, has been moved to the Brown Memorial Chapel. It is free and open to the public. The singers are directed by Dr. Julia Thorn, associate professor of music, and accompanied by Cathy DeRousse. Instrumentalists assisting in the program are students Katie Matza on flute and Tim Nicholson on violin.

Chorale will perform Miserere Mei, Deus by Gregorio Allegri. This is a 13-minute work that is sung annually in the Pontifical Chapel during Holy Week. A number of unsupported legends have grown up with this work, including the supposed fact that it was so treasured that excommunication was the punishment for its unauthorized copying. This is a unique opportunity to hear Renaissance chant by the men of the Centenary Chorale, says Thorn.

The Cantare portion of the program includes three settings of Latin text by 21st century composers, two settings of music about the heart and a medieval French and a Canadian folk song.
