RECENT NEWS AND EVENTS

CENTENARY VOLUNTEERS TRADE PARADES AND PARTIES FOR DIRTY WORK IN SOUTH LOUISIANA over Mardi Gras Break, March 1–5. A group of 23 students, faculty, staff and alumni worked for three days in the New Orleans area. First United Methodist Church in Slidell, La. organized work projects for the group, which primarily required stripping the interiors of several houses in the Gentilly neighborhood. Director of Alumni Relations David Henington, who went on the trip, said that it was "a fantastic and rewarding experience being with enthusiastic and dedicated young adults...and their enormous energy." CENTENARY PROFESSOR GOES TO TURKEY ON ROTARY CLUB EXCHANGE. Assistant Professor of English and New Media Dr. Jeanne Hamming will travel to Izmir, Turkey, April 6 as a member of the Rotary Club's Group Study Exchange team. Her month-long voyage companions include faculty members from Northwestern State University and Bossier Parish Community College as well as an architect from Alexandria, La. According to the Rotary Club, the Group Study Exchange program is "a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for [young professionals] in the early stages of their careers...designed to develop professional and leadership skills among young adults to better prepare them to address the needs of their communities in an increasingly global workplace."

NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE RECOGNIZES CENTENARY CELEBRITY. Centenary's 2004-05 Corrington Award medalist and Attaway Fellow William Logan has won the National Book Critics Circle's prize for criticism. Also, Jack Gilbert, who read here in Spring 2004, won the Circle's prize for poetry. Founded in 1974, the Circle has about 500 members.

ARTICULATE CENTENARY STUDENTS/ALUMNI PEN AWARD-WINNING PAPERS. Overdyke Awards for Best Undergraduate Paper were given to Charlie Starnes ’03 for his paper “Slum Clearance and Self Interest in Shreveport Under the James Gardner Administration–1954 to 1958” and Sara Thompson ’05 for her paper “Optimism was not Enough: Shreveport’s Reaction to the Onset of the Great Depression.” Both student entries were prepared under the supervision of Dr. Sam Shepherd Jr., professor of history at Centenary and were recently published in the North Louisiana History Journal, Fall 2005, Vol. 36 No. 4.

Also, Centenary senior Diya Surie '06 has been awarded the 2006 Odum Award from the Southern Sociological Society for her paper on "Ideological Foundations of Healthcare Inequality: A Cross-Cultural Study." Centenary biology major Josh Broussard '06 received the Rollin H. Baker Award at the 24th annual meeting of the Texas Society of Mammalogists. This award is given for the best undergraduate research presentation. CENTENARY HAPPENINGS, highlighting upcoming events

DR. NORMAN FRANCIS, PRESIDENT OF XAVIER UNIVERSITY, will speak at commencement this year. Ceremonies are set for Saturday, May 6 at 10:30 a.m. in the Gold Dome.

MARITAL BLISS? THE FORUM KICKED OFF A TWO-PART SERIES ON "MARRIAGE IN THE 21ST CENTURY," which sparked enthusiastic debate and discussion among students, faculty, staff and community members. Another round of discussion will conclude the series on Tuesday, March 2,1 at 7 p.m. in Kilpatrick Auditorium when members of a student-citizen panel will present their points of view. After the panel, the audience will be able to ask questions and discuss such issues as "Where is marriage going?" and "What should marriage be like in the 21st century?" ACS-CENTENARY GENDER STUDIES CONFERENCE WILL EXAMINE MYRIAD TOPICS from the political ideology of gender to its cultural construction and representation. Over 70 students and faculty members from institutions spanning the globe plan to present their research Friday, March 24, and Saturday, March 25. Keynote speaker and bestselling author Naomi Wolf will discuss beauty myths at a Friday night dinner at the East Ridge Country Club. The Cajun band Magnolia Sisters will entertain at the weekend's crawfish boil finale on Saturday afternoon. The Centenary community may attend any of the sessions free of charge. ZETA TAU ALPHA TEES OFF SECOND ANNUAL GOLF TOURNEY FOR BREAST CANCER RESEARCH March 25 at the Palmetto Country Club in Benton, La. ZTA encourages faculty and staff members to participate by either playing in the four-person scramble or sponsoring others to play. Lunch will begin at 11 a.m., and players will tee off at 1 p.m. All donations are tax deductible and sponsors will receive a sign with their name or company name autographed by professional golfer David Toms. PREVIEW WEEKEND WILL BE HELD ON CAMPUS FRIDAY, APRIL 21–SATURDAY, APRIL 22 as admitted students try to make their final college decisions. Hosted by the Office of Admissions, Preview Weekend will offer students the chance to participate in games on Jones-Rice Field, attend breakout sessions and an organizational fair, and go on campus tours. They will also get to enjoy campus activities such as a late-night block party, the Better Than Ezra concert at the Gold Dome and Kollege Kapers at Marjorie Lyons Playhouse.

HONORS CONVOCATION AND RESEARCH FORUM ON THE HORIZON. This year's Honors Convocation will be held Thursday, April 20 at 5 p.m. in Brown Chapel. Students will present major research projects the following day, Friday, April 21, in Mickle Hall and Kilpatrick Auditorium.

LOUISIANA FILM FEST BRINGS YOUNG FILMMAKERS TO CAMPUS MARCH 31–APRIL 1. The festival will showcase films created by K–12 students through individual screenings. The students will also attend workshops, Q&A sessions and learn practical techniques from filmmaker Sasha Wolf. BOY GETS GIRL, AN ALL-CENTENARY STUDENT SHOW, DEBUTS AT MARJORIE LYONS MARCH 30. This play, written by Rebecca Gilman, will be directed by Charity Schubert with lighting design by Courtney Gaston and scenic design by Brigitte Bechtel. It will be stage managed by Vanna Richardson. Meg Harders: Landscapes will be exhibited in the upstairs gallery through March 26. Harders, a painter from Los Angeles, explains her artistic method: “I search for views that stir powerful emotions in me—the type of memories that stop your heart.”

American Standard: Works by Contemporary North American Artists explores modern issues of standards and expectations in American life. A variety of media will be on display through April 23, including sculpture, painting, photography and printmaking.

Northwest Louisiana Artists’ Triennial Competition will run through May 28. This is a special exhibition featuring regional artists with competition juried by Los Angeles artist Meg Harders and North Carolina artist and gallery director Connie Bostic.

For example, the Communication Department has established a Communication Scholarship Fund to which seniors majoring in communication will contribute just a few dollars each. Other departments should consider setting up similar funds representing their respective departments.
