Centenary Alumni, Students to Work Together to Give Back to Community at Oct. 21 Event

SHREVEPORT, LA - On Saturday, Oct. 21, a group of about 40 Centenary alumni and students will pool efforts to put the finishing touches on homes in Allendale as a part of the Fuller Center for Housing's "Building on Higher Ground" initiative. Volunteers will work from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., completing landscaping and other projects.

The Fuller Center, working in partnership with Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal, has committed to build at least 60 houses in Shreveport for hurricane evacuees and local residents in need. Volunteers from across the nation have now built the first 20 of those homes.

This project marks a heightened effort by the Centenary Alumni Association to motivate alumni to community outreach and service through annual organized projects.

Centenary alumni chapters across the nation are also organizing community service projects. The Houston chapter has initiated a fall canned food drive this month and other alumni have been active in doing clean-up work in South Louisiana this past year alongside Centenary students and United Methodist relief workers.

"Wherever alumni are located, they are engaged in some type of community service," says Hoyt D. Bain, president-elect of the National Centenary Alumni Association and team leader for community outreach. "The Association now seeks to make meaningful projects available to alumni so we can make a difference as a defined unit."

For more information or to volunteer, contact Carla E. Alsandor, director of alumni programs, at 318-869-5008 or alumni@centenary.edu.
