SCRABBLE ® Tournament Oct. 21 to Benefit Literacy Volunteers at Centenary College

SHREVEPORT, LA —The volunteer organization that teaches adults to read is using letters, words and a popular word game to raise needed funds for the cause.

The Literacy Volunteers at Centenary College will hold its first SCRABBLE ® Tournament Saturday, Oct. 21 from 1-6 p.m. at Centenary. Kilpatrick Auditorium, located in the Smith Building at the corner of Kings Highway and Woodlawn Avenue, will be the site.

The organization has been soliciting sponsors and will charge entry fees ($25 for adults, $10 for high school and college students) to raise funds to continue supporting its free classes that cover basic literacy, English for speakers of other languages, pre-GED, U.S. citizenship, enhanced learning, and communication and job prospect improvement for adults 18 and over.

"Experts agree the best way to raise the well-being of a community is through education and many of the adults in our area have missed out on that opportunity," said Maurine Locke, chairman of the Literacy Volunteers at Centenary. Locke said the organization does a wonderful job of securing grants for computers and programs, but needs funds and donations to meet operating expenses and to "keep the doors open."

Organizers of the SCRABBLE ® Tournament hope that it will be an annual tournament that will draw larger numbers of participants and sponsors each year.

Participants can register to play and compete for cash prizes at the beginner, intermediate or challenger levels. Registration forms are available at any Shreve Memorial Library branch or by calling 318-869-2411. Forms and checks made payable to LVCC can be turned in at any Shreve Memorial Library branch or mailed to LVCC at Post Office Box 41188, Shreveport, LA 71134-1188. See Registration Form details.

Play will be in two-person teams with rules of "Traditional Gameplay" used. It is not necessary to have a partner to enter. Partner players will be assigned on the appropriate level of entry as needed. Three 50-minute rounds of competition will be played.
