Fulenchek Named Mid-Con Scholar Athlete of the Year

SHREVEPORT - For the third time in the last four years, a Centenary student-athlete has been named Mid-Continent Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Gents baseball player Brandon Fulenchek (McKinney, Texas) received the conference's top academic honor today after graduating summa cum laude in May and earning a 3.96 GPA, while majoring in economics and finance.

Fulenchek joins former Centenary women's tennis student-athlete Anja Schmidt, who earned the award after the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons.

The McKinney, Texas, native led the 2007 Gents in innings pitched (103.1) and ERA amongst the starting rotation (3.48), while tying for the team lead in wins (8) and was second in complete games (2).

Off the field, Fulenchek was a three-time academic all-conference honoree and named to the Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence as a junior and senior. He was also given the Centenary College Male Athletic Achievement Award, along with garnering Centenary's Top Economics Major and Top Finance Major awards.

Joining Fulenchek as the Mid-Con's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year is former Valparaiso women's basketball standout Betsy Rietma.
