Earth Fair 2008
SHREVEPORT, La.—Students, staff and faculty learned a little about how to help Mother Earth today while munching on healthy snack foods, decorating hand bags and listening to owls hoot in the background during Earth Fair 2008 to celebrate Earth day.
The two-hour event, sponsored by the Centenary Environmental Association, Earth Fair 2008 consisted of events targeted at educating how to better care for our environment. Activities included learning about wildlife with animal expert Rhonda Clay from the Walter B. Jacobs Nature Park, information on the Community Garden and Growing Station being developed on campus, the Wilderness Club and Chemistry Club with hands-on demonstrations, and a canvas bag decorating contest.
Culminating the Fair was a "Tree Hugging" event. Faculty and staff members, including Centenary President Kenneth L. Schwab, were "chained" to trees for 30 minutes as the result of a successful fundraiser that collected the necessary funding to install a 720-watt solar array on the roof of the Magale Memorial Library. The array will not only offset energy costs and reduce GHG emissions, but will also be used by various faculty members for pedagogical purposes.
