Poetry Reading Takes Place in Whited Room, Wednesday, Nov. 19

SHREVEPORT, La. — A poetry reading by Dr. Steve Davenport will take place in the Whited Room in Bynum Commons, located on the Centenary campus, Wednesday, Nov. 19, beginning at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Department of English, the Faculty Convocations Committee and Pandora: The Fine Arts Magazine of Centenary College, and is free and open to the public.

Davenport is the Associate Director of the Creative Writing Program at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and the author of two recent books, Uncontainable Noise, winner of the Transcontinental Poetry Award and Murder on Gasoline Lake, winner of the New American Press spring 2007 Chapbook Contest. His poetry and prose have been published in numerous magazines, including The Iowa Review, Berkeley Fiction Review, 580 Split, Diagram, and Fiction International.

A Ph.D. in American Literature from the UIUC with a dissertation on Jack Kerouac and the Beat Generation, Davenport has also published scholarly essays and reviews in such books as Red, White, & Blues: Poetic Vistas on the Promise of America and Boys Don't Cry?: Rethinking Narratives of Masculinity and Emotion in the U.S. Since 2004, he has been the Creative Nonfiction Editor of the literary magazine Ninth Letter.
