Centenary Competes For Grant For French-Louisiana Poet Anthology

SHREVEPORT, La.—The French Department at Centenary College is competing for a grant in the amount of $5,000 from the Centre de la Francophonie des Ameriques for the best student project.

The goal of the student-based project is to publish an anthology of 40 French-Louisiana poets from the 19th century with the grant used to hire an editor and pay for printing of the materials. The biographies as well as the front material were written by 30 students attending the College.

Once printed, the materials will be distributed to the more than 400 high school libraries in the state. "Most of these schools do not have a single work by a French-speaking Louisiana author so this will be pretty important to the teachers," said Dana Kress, Professor of French.

The Center of the Francophonie des Ameriques contributes to the promotion and development of a future French carrier for the French language in the context of cultural diversity by focusing on strengthening and enhancing relationships, and on complementary action between Francophones and Francophiles from Quebec, Canada and the Americas.
