Step on a Crack

SHREVEPORT, La.— Children and adults alike will be transformed into a world of imaginary friends and the seriousness of family dynamics as seen through the eyes of a child during the Centenary College Theatre Department's production of "Step on a Crack" by Susan Zeder, Nov. 6, 7, 13 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 8, 14 at 2 p.m. in the Marjorie Lyons Playhouse.

The cast includes Lorna Dopson, Leah Tennyson, Andrew Jarboe, Sean Brazeel, Merwin McCrady, and Lauren Morrison.

Directed by Shannon Stoddard, "Step on a Crack" revolves around Ellie Murphy, a young girl, who lives happily with her widowed father, Max. They go bowling, eat TV dinners and she loves to play with junk. Life changes for Ellie when her dad remarries and suddenly she has a stepmother. To cope and escape her problems, Ellie and her imaginary friends launch into a fantasy world. They pretend they are breaking out of prison, meeting Cinderella and Snow White, and enacting Ellie's own funeral where "everyone is really sorry for all the mean things they did" to her. Only by running away and discovering what it is really like to be alone does Ellie begin to come to terms with herself and her own need for connection with her very real parents.

The playwright, Suzan Zeder, has been recognized nationally and internationally as one of the nation's leading playwrights for family audiences. Her long list of awards and accomplishments includes three wins of the Distinguished Play Award, given by the American Alliance of Theatre and Education. Her works include: Wiley and the Hairy Man, Step on a Crack, Doors, Do Not Go Gentle, Mother Hicks and many others.

Ticket cost $10 for adults, $7 for Students, military and senior citizens. Tickets are free for Centenary students, faculty, and staff.
