Hurley Orchestra Presents Intimate Romanticism

Featuring Special Guest Violist Adrienne Gabriel

SHREVEPORT, La.— The Centenary College Hurley Orchestra will perform a free concert, Monday, Oct. 12 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Anderson Auditorium in the Hurley Music Building with special guest, violist Adrienne Gabriel.

Under the direction of Dr. Todd Gabriel, the program's subject is "Intimate Romanticism" featuring very personal works by 19th composers for chamber orchestra.

This year's program series will begin with 15 minute lecture-demonstrations by Dr. Gabriel and the orchestra. "Intimate Romanticism" includes Siegfried-Idyll by Richard Wagner, Scenes of Childhood by Robert Schumann, The Happy Slaves by the Spanish teenager J.C. Arriaga, and a beautiful Romance for viola and orchestra by Max Bruch. The Schumann is a piano work which has been orchestrated by Dr. Gabriel especially for the students and this performance.

Guest performer Adrienne Gabriel has been a violist with the Shreveport Symphony since 1989, as well as a member of the Longview Symphony and Shreveport Opera. She has been a guest artist with the Shreveport Symphony, the Northwestern University Orchestra and the Hurley Symphony Orchestra at Centenary College on numerous occasions. Before coming to Shreveport, she was a member of the Opera Company of Boston, legendary conductor/composer Gunther Schuller's New England Conservatory Ragtime Ensemble, and Budapest String Quartet first violinist Alexander Schneider's New York String Orchestra in Carnegie Hall. Her degrees include a Bachelor of Music from New England Conservatory of Music, and a viola-performance diploma from the North Carolina School of the Arts.

Other performances in the series include "Mozart and Haydn" on Monday, Dec. 7; Hurley Concerto/Aria Concert on Monday, Feb. 8, 2010; and "Ludwig van Beethoven" on Monday, March 29.
