Van Thyn Lecture Series Presents "Plausible Deniability" Nov. 12

SHREVEPORT, La— Centenary College and the Van Thyn Lecture series presents "Plausible Deniability: What the German people should have known during the Third Reich" Thursday, Nov. 12 at:

Marjorie Lyons Playhouse, 11 a.m
Kilpatrick Auditorium, 7 p.m.

The lectures are free and open to the community.

During the lecture, Dr. Chad Fulwider, Assistant Professor of History at Centenary, will share his expertise regarding the Holocaust and discuss what the Germans knew, how they responded to the knowledge of the crimes being committed during the 1940's, and how history illustrates the responsibilities and obligations that accompany life in modern societies.

Dr. Fulwider joined Centenary's faculty as the newest member of the Political Science and History Department, and spent the last eight years studying and teaching at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. He earned his Ph.D. in Modern European History from Emory in 2008.

The presentation is part of the Van Thyn lecture series in honor of Rose and Louis Van Thyn, Holocaust survivors who dedicated themselves to retelling their stories so that people will not forget or repeat those horrors. For her extraordinary community service, Mrs. Van Thyn was awarded the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at Centenary's 2002 commencement exercises.

In order to preserve the legacy of Rose Van Thyn, the Rose and Louis Van Thyn Holocaust Awareness Professorship Program is being established at the College. The program will provide education opportunities to the students of the College and to the surrounding community. The goal of the program is to educate about the history of the Holocaust, and how to recognize signs of intolerance and provide a means for preventing prejudice and hatred. The intention of the professorship is to financially support, in perpetuity, opportunities for the College students and staff, and the community at large, to educate and interact about the Holocaust or current instances of intolerance.
