Hurley School of Music Announces April Concerts

Centenary Senior Dennis Pevey will present "American Synthesis...A Collection of Works by 20th Century Composers." The program features an intriguing and eclectic mix of selections by well-known composers Arnold Schoenberg, Charles Ives, Samuel Barber and Gian-Carlo Menotti, as well as other gifted composers of the 20th century. Assisted by Virginia-Kate Mather, he will perform the world premier of "Every time her hands began to stutter" composed by Centenary music theory/composition major Costas Dafnis.

The program will be a diverse selection of pieces arranged for flute choir, along with an original work by one of the ensemble's favorite composers, Catherine McMichael. They will perform her Suite de Montagne which is made up of songs associated with the westward migration of pioneers. Other works will be some English madrigals, an arrangement of the overture to the opera Nabucco by Verdi, and Alborada y Son by the popular Grammy award winning Paquito d'Rivera.

The members of the ensemble are Centenary students Lucy Fliegel, Jennifer DeLancy, Mary Guerrant, MaLeda Cyrus, and Karley Aiken. They are directed by Sally Horak, instructor of flute at Centenary College and Principal Flutist of the Shreveport Symphony.

The six member ensemble, made up of music majors, will be conducted by Chandler Teague. The concert will explore a variety of dance styles ranging from ragtime to rock to sambas, with a few surprises in between. A composition by world famous Brazilian percussionist/composer Ney Rosauro will be in the mix as well. Several students will also perform a solo piece.
