Museum presents Works from the Collection of Carolyn Nelson Nov. 7

SHREVEPORT, La. (Centenary News Service) — The Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College of Louisiana will present the exhibition Works from the Collection of Carolyn Nelson, November 7 through January 30 in the museum galleries.

The collection will be open to the public for viewing beginning Sunday, Nov. 7, from 1-4 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view throughout the holidays, and includes two dozen extraordinary works from this seminal Shreveport collector.

Nelson has avidly collected for a number of years and has focused on works by artists who were active from the late 19th through the 20th centuries. Included in this exhibition are works by James Whistler, Paul Signac, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Winslow Homer and Joseph Stella among others.

Under the direction of Dr. Lisa Nicoletti, associate professor of art and visual culture, students from her course, "Foundations of Modern Art", researched and created label text for the exhibition as part of their final exam. Students presented their research to Carolyn Nelson and the museum staff at the end of the spring semester, and museum staff will utilize the label text for this exhibition.

Nelson holds a master's degree in Art History, and was the first Director of the Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College when museum opened in 1976. She has lived and worked in Shreveport most of her life, is a Life Member of the Board of the Friends of the Algur Meadows Museum and has served as director of the Robinson Film Center.

As part of programming, Nelson will attend the Members' Exhibition Preview on Saturday, Nov. 6, and will present a Collector's Talk on Sunday, Dec. 5, from 2-3 p.m. in the museum galleries. The community is invited to attend.

The Meadows Museum of Art is located on the campus of Centenary College of Louisiana at 2911 Centenary Boulevard in Shreveport. The Museum is open from noon until 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The Museum is open from noon until 5 p.m. on Thursday, and from 1 until 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Closed on Monday.
