Evangeline Trio set to perform concert Apr 18

SHREVEPORT, La. (Centenary News Service) — Centenary College and the Hurley School of Music present the Evangeline Trio in concert with the Hurley Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Todd Gabriel, Monday, April 18 in the Anderson Auditorium beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Hurley Orchestra and the Evangeline Trio will perform Ludwig van Beethoven's Concerto in C major, op. 56 for piano, violin, cello and orchestra, known as the "Triple Concerto." It is one of Beethoven's greatest achievements, merging chamber music texture with a symphonic one. It's a demanding piece for three virtuosos, who have to find a balance with each other and yet make a statement within the context of an orchestra work.

The Evangeline Trio consists of violinist Jennifer Carsillo, cellist Ruth Drummond and pianist Dr. Gay Grosz.

Carsillo has appeared as a soloist with orchestras and performed recitals in Russia, Jamaica, Austria, England, France, Italy and throughout the United States. Drummond is principal cellist of the Shreveport Symphony, principal cellist for the Shreveport Summer Music Festival, and director and cellist for the Baroque Artists of Shreveport. Dr. Grosz is well known regionally as a soloist, collaborative artist and adjudicator. She is on the piano faculty at the Hurley School of Music at Centenary College of Louisiana where she teaches piano, accompanying and chamber music.

The evening will begin with the premiere of An American Trumpet Solo for trumpet and strings by Centenary's composition teacher, Dr. Todd Gabriel. This piece was written for trumpeter Michael Scarlato, who will be the soloist. Previously a member of the U.S. Marine Band "The President's Own", Scarlato is a Centenary alumnus, brass specialist for the Caddo Parish Schools, and performs regularly with the Shreveport, Longview and Marshall Symphonies.

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, please call 318.869.5235.
