Centenary College Pays Tribute in September 11 Remembrances

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary faculty members and the Office of Global Engagement have contributed to a September 11 remembrance project, "National Anthems/Patriots' Dreams." The opening ceremony will be held in the Wafer Gallery of the Barnwell Center from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 11. The event was coordinated by Centenary Alumna Dr. Lucienne Bond Simon from the class of 1967.

Louisiana artists, including Centenary faculty members Dr. David Havird and Bruce Allen, submitted poetry and prose as well as art and sculpture expressing the nation's founding ideals and vision for the future.

Centenary's Office of Global Engagement has been involved with supporting the project since its beginnings over a year ago.

"The project has grown into a wonderful opportunity to engage our community which is something that we believe in strongly both through the college's mission and with our student's experiences. Supporting an opportunity in our community, like this one, just seemed like the right thing to do," says Chris Lavan, Director of Global Engagement, who served as the College's representative on the community committee that helped to produce and coordinate the memorial project.

The displays will be on view to the public until October 9.

Other members of the Centenary family participating in 9/11 memorials include Dr. David, Rowe, Lecturer of Music Tom Hundemer, and Adjunct in Music Michael Scarlato.

Dr. David Rowe will be participating in the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the Noel United Methodist Church in Shreveport. The ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary.

Hundemer will be performing in an orchestral and choral concert titled "East Texas Remembers 9/11" on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 6:00 p.m. at the Dodson Auditorium on the Kilgore College campus in Kilgore, Tx. The concert will include music by Aaron Copland, Giuseppe Verdi, and John Williams among others.

Scarlato will be performing in a 9/11 memorial concert titled "A Time for Remembering" at on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Tyler, Tx. The performance is being presented by the Tyler Civic Choral, and is free and open to the public.

September 11 marks the tenth anniversary of the attacks that took the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans. The memorial will enable Shreveport-Bossier residents to pay tribute to the victims and heroes of that day as a united community, paying testimony to the strength of America and the resilience of its people.
