Literacy Volunteers at Centenary College Sponsor Scrabble Tournament

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Literacy Volunteers at Centenary College are sponsoring their 5th Annual Scrabble Tournament on Saturday, October 22. All proceeds will benefit the Literacy Volunteers.

What: Scrabble Tournament
When: Registration begins at 12:00 p.m., Tournament begins at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Kilpatrick Auditorium in the Smith Building

The entry fee is $25 per adult and $10.00 per student. Registration is currently available online. There will be an extra $5.00 fee for registration on the day of the tournament. Players will compete in "Beginner" or "Experienced" levels with first and second place being awarded at both levels. There is a $200 prize for first place and a $100 prize for second place.

At least 28% of our adult population in Louisiana is functionally illiterate, one of the highest rates in the nation. Since April 1984, Literacy Volunteers at Centenary College has served over 3,000 adults in our community who have literacy deficiencies by offering tutoring and instruction free of charge. Literacy Volunteers maintains eight programs:

  • Basic Literacy Program

  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program

  • Pre-GED

  • Obtaining U.S. Citizenship

  • Enhanced Learning Program

  • Spoken English

  • Read On!

  • Health Literacy Program
