Choir Celebrates 70th Anniversary with 63rd Annual Rhapsody in View

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Centenary College Choir, "America's Singing Ambassadors," present Rhapsody in View at the Riverview Theatre. Sponsored by the Downtown Lions Club, the concert takes place Saturday, November 5, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 6, at 2:30 p.m.

This year's Rhapsody in View will feature American music, celebrating unique images and sounds of our country. Some of the musical highlights include: Aaron Copland's Zion's Walls, Randall Thompson's The Last Words of David, Eric Whitacre's Water Night, Joseph Martin's The Awakening, John Rutter's When the Saints Go Marching In, James Erb's Shenandoah, Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, Z. Randall Stroope's Homeland, and Moses Hogan's The Battle of Jericho.

The Choir will also pay tribute to our military with A Salute to the Armed Forces as well as remember the tragedy of September 11, 2001, with Roger Ames's profound Choral Reflection on Amazing Grace. In celebration of the choir's anniversary, over 150 choir alumni will join the current members for certain selections.

Dating back to 1949, this is the largest concert the Choir gives in its hometown. The Shreveport Downtown Lions Club has co-sponsored the event since its inception, with proceeds helping to support the organization's various service projects.

The Centenary Choir has traveled for seven decades, giving concerts in 32 nations on six continents, with a repertoire ranging from Bach to Broadway, world folk music to contemporary church music, and oratorio to opera. The Choir has sung for frontline troops in Korea, Presidents of the United States and Switzerland, the Queen of Denmark, the leaders of NATO, and the Prime Minister of Thailand. In May 2011, the Choir toured Brazil and Argentina.
