Centenary Community Helps Move Archival Records

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Centenary Archives moved over 600 linear feet of archival records and rare books on Thursday, November 10. Students, faculty, and staff lined up to assist Archivist Chris Brown move the records from the attic of Magale Library to a second floor room with new compact shelving.

More than half of the shelving came from a Lake Charles hospital as a donation, which was coordinated by a member of the Louisiana United Methodist Conference.

The history of the Archives and Special Collections department at Centenary College of Louisiana began with the opening of Magale Memorial Library in 1963. During the move into Magale, students, faculty, and staff assisted much like they did on Thursday by carrying books across campus. In May 1975, Centenary hired its first professional archivist.

The Centenary College Archives was established in order to collect, preserve, and make available to researchers rare books and manuscripts relating to the history of Centenary College, the United Methodist Church in Louisiana, and to the history of North Louisiana. Funds from the College and the Commission on Archives and History of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church support the Archives.
