Hurley School of Music features jazz ensemble and piano recitals

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Hurley School of Music will feature three performances in Anderson Auditorium, March 8, 10, and 11. All events are free and open to the public.

On Thursday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m., Centenary's Jazz Ensemble will present a mix of jazz classics and standards from Duke Ellington to Average White Band and Tower of Power. The Ensemble will play under the direction of Bob Maynard.

Centenary student, pianist Cara Lamb, will be presenting her Junior Recital on Saturday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. Included on the program are works by Scarlatti, Beethoven, Ravel and Rachmaninoff.

Lamb is the 2009 recipient of the Mary C. White Scholarship from the Hurley School of Music. She received the Outstanding Music Freshman Award in May of 2010 and was a winner of the Hurley Symphony Orchestra Concerto & Aria competition her freshman year. She most recently won the piano division of the Monroe Symphony League's Emerging Artists Competition on January 14, 2012. Cara is from the piano studio of Dr. Gay Grosz.

Eliot Haas, a 15-year-old sophomore at Caddo Magnet High, will present a piano and cello recital on Sunday, March 11, at 3:00 p.m. The program includes La Cathedrale engloutie by Claude Debussy, Beethoven's Cello Sonata in A Major Op. 69, and Shostakovich's Cello Sonata Op. 40. Joy Ratcliff will join him on the piano.

Haas has been playing cello since age five and piano since age three. Last year, Eliot was a winner in the Red River Radio Young Artist Competition. He has participated in Louisiana All-State Orchestra two years—this year as principal cellist. Eliot has received several honors in piano, winning his division at Rally last year. He has been a piano student of Joy Ratcliff for 10 years.
