Director of Global Engagement swims for grandfather, cancer research

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary's Director of Global Engagement Chris Lavan will be swimming 15,000 yards at the College pool from March 26 through March 31 to raise $10,000 to support cancer research. This is the second year Lavan is attempting the swim in memory of his grandfather, who passed away from liver cancer three years ago.

"Many of us have mentors and role models growing up. My first mentor was my grandfather, Mr. Edgar Jean," said Lavan. "He always taught me to finish what you start. I set out on this journey to finish what I started last year by honoring his memory."

Lavan hopes to raise $4,000 this year for the American Cancer Society, and to get local businesses to match his funds for a total of $10,000.

"I definitely wanted to show our students and other members of the community that you can make a difference and accomplish your goals as long as you're willing to sacrifice and work hard for it," said Lavan.

During this week, Lavan will attempt to swim at least 3,000 yards a day to complete his goal. The distance covered will be a total of 8.5 miles.
