College celebrates National Poetry Month

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Magale Library will host a poetry reading and book discussion, Friday, April 20, 3:00 p.m. in honor of National Poetry Month. Centenary poets and local author Carlos Colon will read their works from The Southern Poetry Anthology, Volume IV: Louisiana. The event is free and open to the public.

Centenary poets include Dr. David Havird, professor of English; Ashley Mace Havird, Centenary lecturer; alumna Rachel Reischling '04; and Jennifer Strange '99, an alumna and Centenary lecturer.

David and Ashley Mace Havird also read selections from their work during the second annual Just Listen to Yourself 2012. The event is a celebration in honor of National Poetry Month hosted by the State Library of Louisiana's Center for the Book.

Published by the Texas Review Press, The Southern Poetry Anthology is a projected 12-16 volume project celebrating established and emerging poets of the American South who have achieved interesting, textured voices.

The Southern Poetry Anthology, Volume IV: Louisiana is currently available through the Centenary College Store and copies will be on sale at the poetry reading and discussion.

National Poetry Month is a month-long, national celebration of poetry established by the Academy of American Poets in 1996. Every April, publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, and schools band together with poets around the country to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture.
