Meadows Museum holds poetry contest

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Meadows Museum is sponsoring a poetry contest in conjunction with the artwork of Monica Zeringue. The contest is open to Louisiana poetry writers, age 18 and above, residing in Caddo Parish. Poems submitted for the contest will be responses to Zeringue's Matador currently on display in the main gallery of the museum.

Matador is a thirty-foot drawing featuring surreal scenes and events that create a running and enigmatic visual. Participating poets can visit Meadows during normal business hours to view the exhibit.

The deadline for submissions is Sunday, October 14, 4:00 p.m. The Friends of the Algur Meadows Museum will present cash awards to contest winners: first prize is $150, second prize is $100; third prize is $75; honorable mentions will receive Barnes & Noble gift cards worth $35 each. Louisiana Poet Laureate Dr. Julie Kane will judge the competition.

Winners will join Dr. Kane for a special program Sunday, November 4, 2:00 p.m. in the museum galleries. The program will feature poetry readings by Dr. Kane and the winners. A book signing with Dr. Kane will follow the readings.

Participants may submit up to three poems. Each poem must be submitted on a separate sheet that includes only the title and poem. A cover sheet must only include the poet's name, title of submitted piece, address, phone number, and email address.

Submissions can be brought directly to the Meadows Museum or mailed to the Meadows Museum of Art, 2911 Centenary Boulevard, Shreveport, LA, 71104.
