Centenary celebrates National Information Literacy and American Archives Months

SHREVEPORT, LA — Magale Library, Hurley Library, and the Centenary Archives are offering a series of recurring workshops in October to celebrate National Information Literacy and American Archives Months. The free workshops are open to the public and will be held in Lab 1A of Magale Library from 3-4:00 p.m. every Friday.

"The workshops will offer an overview of each collection, guide users through online resources, and demonstrate the ease of access to the vast amount of reliable resources each collection holds," said Kristi Kohl, Reference/Electronic Resources/Web Librarian. "National Information Literacy Awareness Month is a time to promote and demonstrate the benefit of information literacy and the skills necessary to find reliable information and use information ethically."

Friday, October 5, and October 19, Librarians Kristi Kohl and Thomas Hundemer will review their respective collections and how to access print, electronic, and music resources. Hundemer will also discuss the current digitization and preservation of recorded music recitals.

October 12 and 26, Archivist Chris Brown will provide an overview of the recently digitized student newspaper, The Conglomerate 1959-1975. In addition, he will offer a behind-the-scenes tour of the Archives.

American Archives Month is an opportunity to raise awareness about the value of archives and archivists.

The National Forum on Information Literacy maintains that information literate people have the skill set that "empowers them to interpret and make informed decisions about their lives, in essence, taking more responsibility for their own individual welfare and that of the nation." National Information Literacy Awareness Month is devoted to promote the benefit of these skills.
