Dorothy Gwin H'91 to be honored at WEQ reception

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Women's Endowment Quorum (WEQ) will host a reception honoring Dr. Dorothy Gwin H'91 for her dedication and service to Centenary College October 25, at the Symphony House. The reception celebrates the establishment of the WEQ Dorothy Bird Gwin First-Generation Scholarship, which was funded by the WEQ and a challenge grant by The Council of Independent Colleges and the Louisiana Independent College Foundation. The Louisiana Board of Regents completed the match through its Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship Program for First-Generation College Students.

"For over fifty years, Dorothy has been passionate about education," said Carolyn Nelson, President of the WEQ. "In her years at Centenary, she inspired so many people and was a great role model. It is an honor to recognize her contributions."

The scholarship provides support for Louisiana students who are the first in their immediate family to attend college. In addition to financial assistance, recipients receive support through active and engaged advising and meaningful campus employment.

Gwin served Centenary for over 17 years in various capacities, including Director of Alumni Relations, Director of Planned Giving, and Dean of Enrollment Management. She also maintained the posts of Dean of the College for 13 years and Professor of Education and Psychology and Chair of the Department of Education for 12 years. She was named an honorary alumna of the College in 1991.

Following her time with Centenary, Gwin served the needs of Shreveport-Bossier through her work as Executive Director of the Community Foundation before retiring in 2004.

Gwin obtained her Ed.D. in Counseling, Education and Clinical Psychology from the University of Kansas in 1958. Prior to joining Centenary, she committed nine years to teaching in Caddo Parish schools.

In existence since 1985, the WEQ has contributed more than one million dollars to Centenary. Membership is open to members of the Centenary community who believe in the vital mission of the College and contribute an annual donation.
