Hurley hosts Wideman International Piano Competition
SHREVEPORT, LA — The 2012 Wideman International Piano Competition will be held November 30-December 2 at Centenary's Hurley School of Music.
The preliminary rounds of the competition will be held Friday, November 30, 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 2:30-6:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 1, 9:30 am-1:00 p.m. and 2:30-6:00 p.m. Admission to the preliminary rounds is free and open to the public. Finals will be held Sunday, December 2, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Admission for the final competition is $5 per person.
Forty-six contestants from sixteen countries will compete for the gold, silver, bronze, and honorable mention titles:
Gold Medal: William Peyton Shehee & Virginia Kilpatrick Shehee Award, $5000
Silver Medal: F. Thomas Siskron III Family, John Shenaut & Glenda Lee Harrison Award, $2500
Bronze Medal: Martha Jones Rice Award given by Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Carl Rice, $1500
Honorable Mention: William and Martha Smith Award and Pearla Despot Awards, $1000
The Gold Medalist will perform with the Northwest Florida Symphony and the South Arkansas Symphony and will play recitals at the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series in Chicago, the Phillips Gallery in Washington, DC, the West End String Quartet Series in Shreveport, and the Rising Star Concert Series in Wichita Falls, TX.
Beginning in 1950, the Nena Wideman Piano Competition has been held annually the first weekend of December at Centenary College-Hurley School of Music. The annual competition was named after the late Nena Wideman, a former member of the Centenary College piano faculty, for her contributions to the contest.
