Centenary launches academic coaching program

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary is launching a fee-based private academic coaching program starting in the spring semester for a limited number of students. Through this new resource, a highly trained learning specialist provides individualized academic support for students who may need additional assistance in reaching their educational goals.

"I work to support students academically so that they can achieve their full potential," said Dr. Melva Turner-Williams, Associate Dean of the College, who is heading the new program. "In my time at Centenary, I have found that we have an incredibly intelligent and very capable student body. I also have discovered that many, if not most, students benefit from professional academic support and assistance."

The learning specialist will act as an accountability partner, academic advocate, and motivator for students throughout the semester. Students who choose to participate can expect assistance in developing stronger study skills as well as support in planning and prioritizing academic assignments, organizing, managing multiple tasks, goal-setting, and decision-making.

Features of the program include personal coaching sessions each week for the entire semester, performance appraisals, and progress reports. Dr. Turner-Williams points out that the benefits of the program are not limited to academics and tutoring:

"Academic coaches will encourage success by helping students develop discipline and gain an understanding of their own learning styles," said Dr. Turner-Williams. "Coaches also will help students develop stronger self-advocacy skills that will eventually strengthen communication between students and faculty."

A limited number of slots are available for this first semester of the academic coaching program, which will be offered at a reduced rate of $3,500.
