BIG Event 6 coming March 16

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Centenary community will gather for the BIG Event 6 on Saturday, March 16. The BIG Event is a student-led day of volunteering during which the Centenary family goes out into the community to beautify the surrounding neighborhoods in an act of giving back.

"BIG Event is important to me because it has created an opportunity to build relationships, express gratitude, and enhance the community that has supported the College for over one-hundred years," said senior Melanie Queen, BIG Event director. "The BIG Event is unlike any other event on our campus because of its unique ability to bring together so many different student, faculty, staff, and alumni for one purpose. I think that's pretty cool."

Volunteers will complete a variety of jobs at both residential and non-residential sites throughout the Highland neighborhood: raking, trimming hedges and bushes, painting, washing shutters and windows. Members of the Centenary and Shreveport-Bossier community who are interested in volunteering can sign up as an individual or team. The sign-up process is available online. Update: As of March 8, registration is closed.

Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. in Kilpatrick Auditorium with free breakfast and a t-shirt. Once their work is complete, volunteers will be provided with a free lunch. The BIG Event will also host a carnival with activities for everyone: a velcro wall, an inflatable jousting area, a dunking booth, sno cones, and music. The surrounding Highland community is invited to attend the carnival on Jones Rice Field beginning at noon.

Centenary's student-run radio station KSCL 91.3 FM will also hold the Tenth Annual Battle of the Bands in the Hargrove Memorial Amphitheatre on campus starting at 1:00 p.m. All are invited to attend.

Centenary's BIG Event has had over 200 volunteers participate every year since its inaugural run in 2008. The BIG Event originated at Texas A&M University and has since expanded to 75 other schools across the nation, including Centenary. It is considered the largest, one-day, student-run service project in the nation.
