Mouzon Biggs, Jr. to deliver Centenary commencement address

SHREVEPORT, LA — Rev. Dr. Mouzon Biggs, Jr. '62, Senior Minister at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, will speak at Centenary College's 2013 commencement ceremony, Saturday, May 4. The annual celebration will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the Gold Dome.

Biggs is a board member, former president, and director for life for the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice, a human relations organization with the mission to fight bias, racism, and bigotry. Biggs is also heavily involved in the Martin Luther King Commemoration Society, an organization that works toward preserving the legacy and memory of the lifework of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Because of his interfaith and interracial work, Biggs has been awarded numerous honors including the Tulsa Interfaith Award, the National Conference of Community and Justice Award, the Tulsa Jewish Community's Righteous Gentile Award, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Keeping the Dream Alive Award, and the Tulsa Rotary's Spirit of Will Rogers Award.

Since becoming Senior Minister there, Boston Avenue United Methodist Church has grown to 8,000 members and has increased the endowment from $200,000 to $26 million.

After graduating from Centenary with a BA in History in 1962, Biggs went on to complete a Master of Theology from Perkins School of Theology in 1965. He received two honorary degrees: a Doctor of Divinity degree from Texas Wesleyan University and a Doctor of Humane Letters from Oklahoma City University.

Biggs resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is married and has two sons and six grandchildren.
