Alumna creates fundraising organization for pediatric cancer research

SHREVEPORT, LA — Medical student Renee Do '11 and a partner have formed St. Baldrick's Shreveport, an organization meant to raise funds for pediatric cancer research.

"The passion for this fundraiser organization was unearthed within me while an undergraduate at Centenary," said Do. "During Brain Awareness Week, I got to teach biology concepts to kids of all ages, and thanks to this experience, I realized how important kids really are to me."

Prior to creating her organization, Do co-chaired the LSU Health Science Center Shreveport campaign "St. Baldrick's Day" that raised over $9000 dollars for pediatric cancer research. In collaboration with the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which works with leading pediatric oncologists to generate creative fundraising initiatives for cancer research, participants in St. Baldrick's Day raised funds by asking family and friends to donate money in exchange for shaving their heads. Do alone raised $1,066 and donated twelve inches of her hair.

"My personal goal was to make a difference, somehow, some way," said Do. "And to my surprise, I am making a difference."
