New Archives exhibit features Centenary's musical heritage

SHREVEPORT, LA — A new exhibit, The Students Make Their Own Music, 1852-2013, from the Centenary Archives and Special Collections is now on display in the Whited Room lobby of Bynum Commons. The exhibit features archival material related to the history of music at Centenary. The exhibit theme was chosen with the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation & Tourism and Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne's officially designated 2013 theme, "Year of Music," in mind.

The items on display explore a variety of topics related to music at Centenary — from the hiring of the first music professor in 1852 to the music library's African instrument restoration project in 2013. This exhibit highlights courses of study, bands, choirs, buildings, and performances throughout the past 161 years.

Centenary Archivist Chris Brown '01 researched and prepared the exhibit. The exhibit is on display from August through December 2013 and is also accessible online.

The mission of the Centenary College Archives and Special Collections is to collect, preserve, and make available the historic records of the College and the Louisiana Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
