Staff Q&A with D'an Gates

SHREVEPORT, LA — D'an Gates was chosen as the first staff person to be highlighted as part of the continuing Q&A series that features one faculty and one staff member each month. Gates is a Sodexo staff member who has been at Centenary for 8 years. "I clean up the 'Caf' and the lobby and make sure everybody has cereal, peanut butter, and jelly in the morning," said Gates.

Gates sat down with Marketing & Communication to talk a little bit more about herself and what makes her job so rewarding.

Q: Where did you grow up?

I grew up in the Coushatta area with my grandparents who actually passed away in 2001. Then I came to Evergreen (Life Services Community Home) in 2004. That's when Volunteers of America called me and said they had found a job for me at Centenary College and I said, "Yeah, I'll take it!"

I've been at Centenary since 2005. This is my first job, and I'm keeping my first job. This is freedom to me. When I first came here I realized how much work I can do in one day. I am totally independent on everything I do here.

Q: What would students be most surprised to find out about you?

They would be surprised to know that they are like a family to me. I'm really close to the students, faculty and staff here and I wouldn't have it any other way. We're all a big family, and were all in it together and that's what I like about Centenary.

Q: Most treasured Centenary memory?

Going to the fitness center, the sub, walking around campus, going to the library, playing on the computer—those are my favorite things about Centenary and favorite memories. I especially like visiting the bookstore. Everyone knows I'm the number one shopper at the bookstore. If I have money I'm going there!

Q: What leader do you most admire?

I admire the people of Centenary College of Louisiana! I also admire Governor Bobby Jindal. I've met him twice.

Q: What's an item you still have on your bucket list?

I want to have my own house one day. I also want to go on a cruise. That's my big dream. I want to cruise the Bahamas, Virgin Islands, St. Croix, Jamaica, and the Caribbean.

Q: What is your goal this year?

My goal is stay here at Centenary forever.

Q: What advice would you give your students?

Do the best you can, the real best you can. Especially the basketball stars. Please win the National Championship for me! I want all the teams to have confidence in themselves.
