Centenary welcomes local female impersonators as part of ongoing series

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College's Department of Psychology will host two local female impersonators, Prada Mylan and Stephanie Styles, Monday, February 17, in Marjorie Lyons Playhouse at 7 p.m. for a free night of entertainment, education, and a Q&A session open to the public.

"Many of our students have not had the opportunity to see an 'illusionist' perform before," said Dr. Amy Hammond, Assistant Professor of Psychology, who is hosting the performers in conjunction with her Human Sexuality course. "In addition to seeing what this type of performance is all about, I'm hoping that our audience will gain an appreciation for the performers as people and learn a bit about the diversity among folks who do female impersonation and what motivates them to perform."

Mylan and Styles' revue will consist of song, dance, and comedic routines. Their performance is part of an ongoing series at Centenary that explores human sexuality. The next presentation will be March 12 with Dan Savage, co-founder of the It Gets Better Project and writer for the internationally syndicated sex advice column, Savage Love, followed by a visit from Dr. Bill Yarber of the Kinsey Institute who will present the convocation To Hook Up, or Not to Hook Up - Healthy Sexuality in the College Student on March 25.

Mylan has performed throughout the region for more than five years in clubs such as Oz in New Orleans, Olympus and Unique Bar & Lounge in Alexandria, and Central Station in Shreveport. Mylan is a promoter of and participant in LGBT pageants and identifies as transgender.

Styles has been performing since 2010 in Longview, Monroe, and Shreveport and identifies as a homosexual male while not in costume.

In between acts, Centenary's premier and student-run improv troupe, Alan's Hot Tub, will entertain guests.
