Artist Todd Camplin opens exhibition at Magale Library March 31

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College will host "Recent Works by Todd Camplin," a collection of original, abstract paintings, beginning Monday, March 31. An opening reception will take place on Sunday, April 6, 2-4 p.m. in Magale Library and is free and open to the public.

According to Camplin's artist statement, the pieces are inspired from abstracting text into objects and images:

"I start with text, because words have always mystified me. I read some words backwards, and I drop prefixes and suffixes to words when I am reading. Plus, I read a few letters backwards."

Camplin was raised by a coal miner and homemaker, who encouraged him to go to college and "seek his own way." He always felt pressured to be in business and work with his hands, but eventually decided to work toward a degree in graphic design:

"Words have always posed a challenge for me to understand because words act partly as a space between an object and meaning. That tension has been inspiring me to build these images from words."
