Speaker to prompt community to remember the Holocaust

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College and the B'nai Zion Congregation will host Dr. Barbara Glück, Director of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial in Austria and current Fellow at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, on Monday, April 7. Glück's presentation, "It's about Keeping It Alive the Right Way: Holocaust Remembrance, 70 Years After" will take place at 7 p.m. at the B'nai Zion Congregation at 245 Southfield Road in Shreveport. The event is free and open to the public.

In addition to her presentation, Glück will also visit with Centenary students studying the Holocaust, 20th-Century History, Religious Studies, and Theatre.

Glück earned PhDs in both History and Political Science from the University of Vienna in 2002 and 2003, respectively. As director of the Mauthausen Memorial, she is part of the Department Head Memorials and War Graves Commission of Austria's Ministry of the Interior, which is responsible for all war memorials, war graves, and war cemeteries in Austria. Her recent lectures include "Site and Commemoration" at the Mauthausen Memorial, Vienna, 2012; "Historical Exhibitions" at the Mauthausen Memorial, Vienna, 2011; and "The Renewing Process of the Mauthausen Memorial" at Orte-Dinge-Spuren, Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin, 2011. While in residence in the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, Glück will be working on "Biographies of Former Prisoners at Mauthausen and its Subcamps."

She is currently conducting research on recorded interviews with former prisoners held at Mauthausen and one of its subcamps. The Mauthausen Memorial's archive only has about 100 taped interviews as historians have largely ignored oral histories on the Holocaust in Austria since the 1970s. Glück intends to build a comprehensive database of sources and interviews in order to better educate visitors of the Mauthausen Memorial to better understand the workings of the Holocaust in Austria, especially Mauthausen and its subcamps.
