Meadows Museum of Art hosts local student art through May 18

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary's Meadows Museum of Art will host two local student art exhibitions from May 4 through May 18, highlighting exceptional art created by students in the region. The Museum's first floor will be devoted to the work of more than 100 students from the Caddo Parish Talented Arts Program. The entire second floor will feature hundreds of artworks from Caddo Parish Magnet High School.

The opening reception for all the student artists will take place Sunday, May 4, from 1-3 p.m. Both exhibitions and the reception are free and open to the public.

The Magnet High School Exhibition:

The works representing Caddo Magnet High School are from the classes of Shirlene Alexander, Marabella Dunn, and Holli Hennessy, and include Design Fundamentals, Advanced Drawing, Mixed Media, Painting, Advanced Placement Portfolio, and Advanced Ceramics. Also represented are works by digital photography students under the direction of Terry Flores.

The Caddo Magnet Art Department includes 560 students receiving a high level of technical and creative concept instruction.

The TAP Exhibition:

Included in the Talented Arts Program (TAP) exhibition are both two and three-dimensional pieces from students who study under Myra Bouquet, Erinn Buteau, Laura Harter, Vicki Jacobsen, Lana Langston Johnson, Arden Kennedy, James King, Thomas Little, and Emily Welch.

The Talented Arts Program in Caddo Schools is a special educational program that seeks to provide art enrichment for any student identified as Talented through a school referral and an audition process. TAP currently serves students in 32 Caddo Parish School Board public schools.

Bright, colorful, and exciting works by students in grades first through eighth grades are on exhibit and represent a sampling of work from Arthur Circle Elementary, Donnie Bickham Middle, Blanchard Elementary, Broadmoor Middle, Caddo Middle Magnet, Claiborne Elementary, Eden Gardens Elementary, Fairfield Elementary, Forest Hill Elementary, Herndon Elementary/Middle, Judson Elementary, Keithville Elementary/Middle, North Highlands Elementary, Riverside Elementary, Shreve Island Elementary, South Highlands Elementary, A. C. Steere Elementary, Summer Grove Elementary, Timmons Elementary, University Elementary, Walnut Hill Elementary/Middle, and Youree Drive Middle.

Exemplary high school works focus on design principles, color theory, subtractive sculpture, and oil painting and represent an overview of work done by students at C. E. Byrd High School, Caddo Magnet High School, Captain Shreve High School, Huntington High School, Northwood High School, and Booker T. Washington High School. Students in these classes are enrolled in an honors elective class on their campuses.

The Meadows Museum of Art is located on the campus of Centenary College of Louisiana at 2911 Centenary Boulevard in Shreveport. The Museum is open to the general public from noon until 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; from noon until 5 p.m. on Thursday; and from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
