DPS has a new ride

SHREVEPORT, LA — There is a new vehicle on Centenary's campus that is drawing the attention of students, and it is not a fancy car. Centenary's Department of Public Safety recently acquired a brand new golf cart through funding by the Muses, a philanthropic group dedicated to funding projects and programs for Centenary students.

"This cart promotes safe driving habits among Centenary students and will provide rides for students at any time of day," said Chief Eddie Walker, Director of Public Safety. "We have an existing cart that is very large and hard to navigate around campus and in between buildings. We really wanted to have something more mobile to get to our students, even at night."

The cart, clad in yellow and black, features signage to promote an anti-drinking and driving campaign along with bright lights for night driving, a PA system, mp3 hook ups with speakers for campus events, and taxi-themed trims.

"Our goal is to be an approachable department on campus," said Walker. "Most of our contact with students is positive through our RAD-training, Check Your Ride program, and safety talks. This cart is another way to make our students feel comfortable and call on us when they need assistance."

David Williams, Manager of Advancement Services and liaison to the Muses, first prompted Walker to make a proposal to the Muses, whose proceeds from the annual Book Bazaar fund campus projects not included in the regular college budget.

Walker submitted a proposal to the Muses after the 2013 Book Bazaar and was awarded almost $10,000 for the purchase.

"We can't thank the ladies of the Muses enough," said Walker. "Just buy a book at the Bazaar and support all the good that they do for our campus community."

This year's annual Book Bazaar will take place September 5 and 6 in the Centenary Gold Dome. Donations may be made at the final book drop at the Book House, located in Centenary Square, 108 East Kings Highway on Monday, August 11, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
