Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow to speak on film, the future of documentaries

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College will host Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow Peter Frumkin March 17 to March 19. Frumkin is a director, writer, and producer of documentaries and other non-fiction media.

During his stay, Frumkin will present a lecture for the general public Tuesday, March 17, at 5:30 p.m. in Kilpatrick Auditorium; admittance will be free. Frumkin will also host two student workshop sessions in the Whited Room from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday where students will learn how to shoot and edit their own short films. Students are encouraged to bring their own iPhones or iPads. On Thursday, March 19, participants' short films will be screened in the Whited Room. Finally, a public screening of Woody Guthrie: Ain't Got No Home will be held at the Robinson Film Center Wednesday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m.

With more than 30 years of experience, Frumkin has seen his work broadcast on networks such as PBS, the BBC, the Discovery Channel, and the History Channel, as well as others. He addresses a broad range of subjects, including history, culture, environmental policy, science and engineering, health care policy, and medical ethics. Some of his more notable works are Tobacco Roads, an investigation into tobacco smuggling in the Balkans; Caring for Your Parents, which follows five Rhode Island families as they face the challenges of caring for ailing elderly parents; the award-winning Woody Guthrie: Ain't Got No Home for the PBS American Masters series; and Emmy-nominated Typhoid Mary: The Most Dangerous Woman in America. Recently, Frumkin has produced a website called AboutFace, which is about military veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Frumkin is a member of the Directors Guild of America and is President of Peter Frumkin Productions, LLC in Boston, Massachusetts.

For more than 35 years, the Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows program has brought prominent artists, diplomats, journalists, business leaders, and other nonacademic professionals to campuses across the United States for substantive dialogue with students and faculty members. The program is organized by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), which is the major national service organization for all small and mid-sized, independent, liberal arts colleges and universities in the United States.
